Nigerian traditional bridal fashion is undeniably enchanting, and one thing that resonates among different tribes is the regality of the outfits.
Fashion designer Bibi Lawrence perfectly captures this with “The Iyoba Collection.” The collection features three exquisite traditional couture bridal dresses designed for the Edo, Igbo, and Efik brides. With intricate details such as 3D bead embroidery, fabric manipulation, and origami floral accents, each dress is a celebration of craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
Every piece in this collection radiates elegance and grandeur, making it a dream for brides who want to blend tradition with high-fashion artistry.
Here’s how the designer describes the collection:
‘lyoba’ is a title given to the Queen Mother of the Kingdom of Benin. She was a key figure in the kingdom’s political and social affairs. The first lyoba was Idia, the mother of King Esigie. Idia was known for her political skills and medical knowledge. Esigie created the title of lyoba to honour Idia for her help in winning important battles.
The Iyoba Collection features 3 traditional couture bridal dresses representing 3 different regions in Nigeria. The collection showcases intricate couture details like 3d bead embroidery, 3d fabric manipulation, origami floral detailing, and so much more. The Iyoba collections is a bridal collection that reflects and celebrates the strength, beauty, royalty and resilience of the woman – the woman about to become a wife, women as mothers, women in all walks of their life.
