Their love story as shared by Adaeze:
A few years back in 2014, I was in my 200 level at the University of Lagos. I had gone home to attend a church event in which a mass choir in the region was to perform. There were several rehearsals and I was fully involved, representing my church choir at the time. On one of the rehearsal days, I was teaching the mass choir a song (“Arugbo Ojo” by Minister Kenn) that we were to perform during the event. We ran it a few times and it was close to perfect – we were done for the day. Immediately after we finished, there came a tall and cute looking guy who ran toward me to speak with me. After a few chit-chats, we exchanged phone numbers and began talking. As the days went by, there was this strong connection we had that would make us talk for hours without getting tired. We never had a formal date or hang out, but it always felt like he was present whenever we spoke over the phone. We would also have midnight calls and never get tired. I was super happy, even my roommates at the time could tell, I thought I had found the one. As time went on, the unimaginable happened. Minutes became hours, hours became days, days became months and months became years. This guy totally ghosted me! 😳 Surprising yeah? Yes! I couldn’t explain it too. To be fair, I waited and waited for him to call me again. I guess I was too scared to call and ask what was going on. I never understood what went wrong. I eventually moved on and forgot about him. I also deleted his number from my phone.
While we were exchanging phone numbers, my dad walked up to us and said to her: “I can see that you have met my son” – “Son, this is Apostle Onah’s daughter that I told you about.” I was like: “Huh?”. At this point, it all made sense to me as to why he was hell-bent on me going with him to the pastors’ meeting. I was set up! After battling with myself as to whether to call her that day after I got home, I decided to call her, and it was such an amazing conversation filled with butterflies. She was funny, sweet and such a great conversationalist. We became so close for over a year and when I realised that I was falling for her, I ghosted her for 3 years because of my “stupid code” that I could not be romantically involved with any family friend or anyone close to the family.
On New Year’s day in 2018, I had a strange call from someone who wanted to revive his lost friendships. Guess who that was, Bond! Apparently, he realized that he had lost me. After several conversations, we became friends again and a few weeks later this guy asked me to be his girlfriend. Of course, I wasn’t ready to give him the opportunity to ghost me again! So, I didn’t accept. It took months of begging, but he never gave up! When I had a conviction that he was for real this time, I finally accepted. On July 10th 2018, we started dating. I later realized that I couldn’t let go of this wonderful feeling of being with him. I saw all that I was missing all those years, and the rest they say is history. Fast forward to October 1st, 2021, this ‘beautiful’ man (inside joke 😂) asked me to be his wife and I said yes to forever with him. I’m super excited to do life with Bond and I can’t wait for the beautiful things the future holds for us. ❤️
Here’s Bond’s side of the story:
In April 2014, I had just finished my 300 level exams in Babcock and my family picked me up for summer vacation. On our way home, my dad could not stop gushing about how he had found a very beautiful wife for me. We all laughed over it as we thought it was one of his usual old school jokes. And then in a serious tone, he confirmed that he was not joking and that the “beautiful princess” was one of the daughters of his friend. Upon hearing this, I immediately deleted the idea from my head because I had a code of not being involved in any romantic relationship with anyone who was too close to the family – I mean, I can’t have everyone up in my business. A couple of days later, my dad asked me to accompany him to a meeting of pastors. I was like, “I am not a pastor, so why should I accompany you?” and he said, “don’t worry it will be fun”. Although it seemed fishy to me, I just thought it was his awkward way of trying to spend time with me. When we got to the church where the meeting was to be held, I saw a group of choristers rehearsing and I sat at the back of the church so that I could continue watching Grey’s Anatomy without any disturbance. While searching for where I stopped, I heard the most sonorous and beautiful voice singing the famous “Arugbo Ojo by Minister Kenn”. It was nothing like I had heard before. I lifted my head immediately to see who was singing and I saw this beautiful princess who was even more beautiful than her amazing voice.😍 I was like: “Omo see fine babe, see sweet voice… Bond you don hammer oh”. When she was done singing, I walked up to her to chat her up and get to know her before any other guy could shoot his shot.
While we were exchanging phone numbers, my dad walked up to us and said to her: “I can see that you have met my son” – “Son, this is Apostle Onah’s daughter that I told you about.” I was like: “huh?”. At this point, it all made sense to me as to why he was hell bent on me going with him to the pastors’ meeting. I was set up! After battling with myself as to whether to call her that day after I got home, I decided to call her, and it was such an amazing conversation filled with butterflies. We became so close for over a year and when I realised that I was falling for her, I ghosted her for 3 years because of my “stupid code” that I could not be romantically involved with any family friend or anyone close to the family.
On the 1st of January 2018, I made a new year resolution to do better at keeping in touch with my friends, so I went through my phonebook to call all my old friends and there her number was staring at me. At that point, all I said to myself was: “Abeg, codes are meant to be broken”. I called her immediately, apologized and she forgave me. I asked her to be my girlfriend the next month and she refused to give me an answer until after several months. I guess this was punishment for ghosting her for 3 years. On 15th April 2021, I went into a ring shop and broke the bank by buying a stunning engagement ring. I kept the ring for several months – waiting for the right moment as I was worried that she would say “No”. I finally asked her to marry me on the 1st of October 2021 after a lovely dinner at Circa Non-Pareil, and she accepted. I was super excited because she is everything and more than I have ever prayed to God for. Ultimately, I feel favoured and blessed that I get to do life with this “big head” and the queen of my heart, for which I am thankful to God every day.❤️
