Debola can definitely relate, as that’s how her fairytale with Opeyemi began. Seven years after their meet-cute, the lovebirds have decided to spend the rest of their lives together. They tied the knot in an intimate civil wedding ceremony, making everything official. From Debola’s effortlessly chic outfit to Opeyemi’s sharp tailored suit, their style was truly impeccable. I had just moved to Canada barely two years before I met Ope. His brother, who I had known before him, was (and is) my then-housemates’ friend. Ope accompanied his brother, Bolaji to our house on that faithful day and I could not, for the life of me, understand why he kept trying to make a conversation when he clearly saw how glued I was to whatever I was doing on my laptop. In my defence, I was a burnt out, international grad student, struggling to find an internship placement at the time. Thank goodness he didn’t give up! Funny story, he kept coming around after that day, driving about two hours, from another town, almost every other weekend just to see me, and for us to get to know each other. He now argues that I wasn’t the main reason he was making those trips back and forth of Toronto that year but please don’t believe him, lol.

He continued doing this for almost six months, without asking for my phone number. Would you believe it?? At first, I didn’t pick up on him wanting a relationship, because of this reason. Secondly, I was not looking for a relationship either. And thirdly, he would plan his trips so meticulously and had other valid personal reasons to visit. But hey! Let’s focus on the star of the show here and the main reason for those trips, me of course!  Down the line, I started to piece things together and in hindsight, it makes a lot of sense. I now know why things went the way they did. My man is one the most gentlemanly, the smartest, and most well-calculated people you’ll ever meet. His intentionality, kindness and unwavering support is unmatched. Whatever it is in life that you join forces with him on, you’re bound to win and can be rest assured it will be a success.

He never loses sight of what he wants and he sure knows how to strategically keep his eyes the price (aka me and other things), always!

In August, 2017, after months of knowing each other, he finally asked for my number and asked me out on an official date. Fast forward to August 2024, after many trips around the sun, the sweetest “Will you marry me?” of my dreams, and many adventures around the world, we’re now LEGALLY EACH OTHER’s! Forever! I guess the best things and the best people truly come to you when you’re not looking and at the least expectant. What a blissful and special ride it has been. Looking forward to the rest of the journey as we officially seal our ‘Forever’. I am so blessed to be doing life with the best guy EVER.
