Michael and I first met while we were in secondary school, after he moved from Nigeria to the US. Our families have been close friends for decades, which makes pinpointing the exact moment we first met nearly impossible—it feels as though we’ve always been a part of each other’s lives. But there is one moment we remember vividly, one that changed everything. It was four years ago, at his cousin’s surprise birthday party. After years of going our separate ways and living our own lives, fate brought us together again that night.

I remember the moment our eyes met across the room, a connection that felt familiar yet somehow new. We struck up a conversation, and what started as catching up turned into hours of laughter, stories, and shared memories. Time seemed to stop as we rediscovered each other in a way we never had before. When the night ended and we went our separate ways, there was something neither of us could ignore—a spark that hadn’t been there before, or maybe one that had always been there, waiting for the right moment. We started dating, and his favorite thing to say was “I can’t wait to make you my wife.” As you can see, he has made good on that promise!
